Major works complete on Francis Boulevard intersection as part of the Sunbury Road Upgrade

Motorists on Sunbury’s busiest arterial road are a step closer to improved traffic flow and reliability thanks to the early completion of major works on the Francis Boulevard intersection as part of the Sunbury Road Upgrade.

The works now pave the way for final intersection completion and critical lane widening works to take place this year, to enable more reliable and safer journeys from Sunbury Road into Goonawarra. The new traffic lights at Francis Boulevard intersection will provide Goonawarra locals better access to Sunbury Road, as well as pedestrian crossings, better walking and cycling paths – which will be open to users at the end of July - and improved drainage.

Works to transform the Francis Boulevard and Sunbury Road junction intensified in April, with teams working around the clock to minimise the length of traffic delays – completing 3 months’ of work in 5 weeks.

Traffic islands have been built, and the road prepared for new turning lanes which replace the former roundabout at the intersection.

The Sunbury Road Upgrade project will benefit all road users, with new turning lanes reducing the risk of vehicle crashes and pedestrian improvements making walking from Goonawarra to current and future nearby shopping and employment precincts safer.

The new Francis Boulevard intersection is 1 of 3 to be upgraded on Sunbury Road between Powlett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest/Loemans Road – with final intersections to be commissioned at Lancefield Road later this year and installed at the entrance to the Sunbury Eco-Hub.

The Sunbury Road Upgrade is delivering new traffic lanes and shared-use paths between Powlett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest Road. Other improvements include intersections upgrades and the construction of a second Jacksons Creek crossing with a new bridge over the waterway.

Drivers are encouraged to visit the Sunbury Road Upgrade page for winter works updates, detour information and to plan their journey. The project is scheduled for completion by 2025.
