From 30 April 2022, Campbell Arcade and the Degraves Street Underpass will close for up to 2 years to finish construction of a new pedestrian underpass as part of the Metro Tunnel Project.
Major construction will begin in May to complete ‘Flinders Link’, the walkway between the new Town Hall Station and Flinders Street Station.
The walkway will connect to Flinders Street Station via the existing Campbell Arcade/Degraves Street subway, with a design that preserves the key heritage features of the arcade and ensures the majority of shopfronts remain outside the myki gates.
The link will allow passengers to quickly interchange between Metro Tunnel and airport services, and City Loop and Flinders Street services, without having to touch off and back on.
To finish building this connection, Campbell Arcade and the Degraves Street underpass will be closed from 30 April for up to 2 years. Passengers will be able to access Flinders Street Station at Swanston Street and Elizabeth Street.
Once built Flinders Link will also make Flinders Street Station more accessible by installing 6 new lifts from the Degraves Street subway to platforms 1-10. Currently the only lifts are at the Swanston Street end of the station, via the concourse.
When finished, the Metro Tunnel will create capacity for more than a half a million additional passengers per week to travel during peak times across Melbourne’s train network and will have a future rail connection direct to Melbourne Airport.
