All 5 Metro Tunnel stations finished

Back to Newsfeed

All 5 Metro Tunnel stations are now complete.

Major construction on the 2 CBD stations – Town Hall and State Library - is complete. These are the first city train stations to be built in over 40 years and the last of the Metro Tunnel stations to be finished.

Major construction at State Library Station is complete

Located below Swanston Street, between La Trobe and Franklin streets, State Library Station will connect passengers directly to RMIT University and Melbourne City Baths and create a new connection to the Queen Victoria Market.

The station features 2 entrances: a main entrance on the corner of Swanston and La Trobe streets and one on Franklin Street directly outside RMIT.

It also shares a concourse with Melbourne Central Station, making it easy to change between Metro Tunnel and City Loop services without needing to tap off.

Around-the-clock construction began on State Library Station in 2017. It is the deepest point of the Metro Tunnel and sits 40m below street level.

The station features:

  • 12m-high columns topped with massive beams to echo the grand architecture of its namesake, the State Library of Victoria.
  • The artwork Forever facing La Trobe Street by Australian artist Danie Mellor.
  • A spectacular 10m-high arched ceiling above the platforms with chandelier lights designed and made in Melbourne.
  • 18m wide platforms– some of the widest underground metro platforms in the world.

It’s no coincidence that the 2 city stations were the last to be completed. The CBD location, along with their depth always meant a longer and more complex build compared to Arden, Parkville and Anzac stations.  With all 5 stations now complete, we’re getting ready for the opening of the Metro Tunnel later this year.
