New look for Swanston Street as tower cranes go up

Back to Newsfeed

After 3 years, it's nearly time for the City Square acoustic shed at Town Hall Station to come down. The large noise-cancelling shed has done its job during that time, shielding the construction site and allowing crews to work 24/7 on the station below.

To help dismantle the shed, a brand new 50m tower crane was recently installed on Swanston Street, with the last piece – the jib – now in place. This new tower crane will begin assembling a second tower crane in late July.

Once the shed is removed, the cranes will be used to move materials and equipment to and from site as construction continues on the station’s upper levels and above-ground entrance.

Town Hall Station is 260m long – longer than a city block – and as deep as a 5-storey building. When it opens in 2025, it will connect to the Metro Tunnel’s 4 other underground stations and the new Sunbury to Cranbourne/Pakenham Line, and will have a direct, underground pedestrian link to Flinders Street Station and City Loop services.
