Tunnelling a new sewer

Back to Newsfeed

We’re a step closer to building North East Link, with the completion of tunnelling to move a major sewer ahead of construction of new road tunnels.

The complex operation has seen 3 mini tunnel boring machines (TBMs) dig 1.8km of new sewer under Bulleen while life continues above. After more than 170 days underground, the 3 mini-TBMs have completed tunnelling to move the sewer out of the way of North East Link.

In the coming months, crews will work to commission the new sewer and decommission the old sewer that was originally built in the 1960s and services thousands of homes and businesses across Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

It’s a crucial step to get ready to build the 6.5km North East Link tunnels, fixing the missing link in our freeway network, reducing travel times and taking trucks off local roads.
