AJ Burkitt remediation update

Back to Newsfeed

Thank you for your continued patience as we continue to remediate AJ Burkitt Reserve.

Over the past few weeks we have carried out extensive geotechnical testing across multiple areas of the reserve which includes drilling into the ground and grouting to re-fill drill holes. This testing was essential to confirm the subsurface ground conditions are safe. Due to recent weather conditions, this work has taken longer than initially expected.

Works to remove some of the concrete used to stabilise the surface hole has now been completed. Backfilling the surface hole with soil is now underway which will be followed by reinstatement of turf to restore the grounds. The project contractor is working closely with Banyule City Council to ensure remediation of the oval is completed to enable its use by local sporting clubs and community as soon as possible.

Throughout these works the project contractor has been working closely with Banyule City Council to ensure the local sporting clubs impacted have been able to relocate games and that clubs are supported during this unexpected disruption to their seasons.

Handback of the oval to Banyule City Council is currently expected in late April, and we will keep people up to date as these works progress.

Surface monitoring continues

Tunnelling is powering ahead on North East Link with TBM1 more than 85% into its journey and TBM2 following closely behind.

Out of an abundance of caution, we will continue daily ground condition monitoring at Banksia Park and AJ Burkitt Reserve, and the Main Yarra Trail will remain closed during excavation of the cross passages below.

These additional measures are part of the Project’s improved procedures and systems to further support the safety of the local environment and community as we deliver North East Link.
