The saplings from one of Melbourne’s most well-known trees are continuing to grow and secure the legacy of the River Red Gum in Bulleen.
50 seeds taken from the large tree at the corner of Manningham Road and Bridge Street were nurtured and planted at parklands along the Yarra River in 2023, and have been monitored to ensure their healthy growth.
The original River Red Gum, which is estimated to be more than 300 years old, has also continued to be maintained by environmental experts while construction of the North East Link tunnels is underway.
Work to secure the future of the tree includes designing new irrigation systems, testing of soil moisture, and the installation of protection zones around the tree.
After a recent assessment of the tree, expert arborists recommended some minor pruning that will take place in December for the health of the tree.
More than 30,000 trees will be planted for North East Link and connecting M80 Ring Road and Eastern Freeway upgrades, with more than 3,000 trees planted early, while new open space will also be created along the Yarra River in Bulleen and Banyule Creek in Yallambie.
