Work on the Bulleen Road interchange has reached the halfway mark following the mega lift of nine large beams over the weekend.
The latest mega lift is the third this year and forms part of the elevated ramp that will take drivers from the North East Link tunnel onto the Eastern Freeway heading towards the city.
Nine large beams that were joined together onsite and weighing over 550 tonnes were lifted with one crane, and placed onto the highest point of the new Bulleen interchange.
The Eastern Freeway was closed between Bulleen and Springvale roads over the weekend allowing crews to safely lift and install this large section of the new future Bulleen interchange. While the freeway was closed, crews also continued to build noise walls, install freeway technology and lay asphalt.
Safely completing large beam lifts over the freeway is a major feat, with complex work happening behind the scenes to reduce disruptions for drivers.
The Eastern Freeway Upgrades will create seamless connections to the North East Link tunnels for road users and deliver:
- six new express lanes
- Melbourne’s first express busway
- revitalised parklands wetlands and waterways
- smarter on-road traffic technology
- new and upgraded walking and cycling connections
- new and upgraded noise walls designed to meet Victoria’s toughest noise standard
- two new and upgraded park and rides at Bulleen and Doncaster.
