People near North East Link Tunnels construction areas can green their garden by planting up to 2 free trees – as part of our Greener North East program.
The Backyard tree planting program has launched to support residents through major construction of the North East Link Tunnels in Watsonia, Macleod, Yallambie, Rosanna, Viewbank and Bulleen. Residents in these suburbs can choose up to 2 free trees per household, with 1000 trees available.
A range of native trees ideal for planting and growing in gardens are on offer including wattles, bottlebrushes and gum trees.
The Backyard tree planting program is on top of work already underway to plant at least 2 trees for every 1 removed to build North East Link. Over 2000 trees have been planted for an early tree planting program so far in local streets, parks and sports fields – with more planned for this year.
North East Link has partnered with Yarra View Bushland Nursery, Australia’s largest social enterprise nursery, to grow these trees for local gardens. The nursery works to build skills and confidence for over 85 adults with an intellectual disability through supported employment.
