North East Link receives global recognition for carbon emission standards

North East Link has become the first infrastructure project in Australia to receive the internationally recognised PAS2080 certification.

This global standard focuses on reducing carbon emissions in infrastructure development, and is awarded to projects that demonstrate clear and measurable plans for addressing climate change throughout the design and build, as well as the future operation and use of the project.

Spark North East Link, the contractor building the 6.5km twin tunnel between Watsonia and Bulleen, was awarded the PAS2080 certification for its commitment to sustainability and specifically carbon management throughout the project’s life cycle.

Creating shared ownership of carbon has been a key focus for Spark, ensuring that carbon is considered and embedded across all teams and project stages. Measures have included ensuring 100% renewable power is used during construction, supplementing concrete with low carbon recycled materials, and committing to net zero emissions in the operation and maintenance of North East Link.

This Australian-first highlights the importance of the sustainability and environmental aspects that are being considered at every stage of the construction and future operation of Victoria’s largest road project.

It also comes as progress is well underway on the construction of the tunnels, with TBM Zelda recently reaching the first kilometre of excavation, and TBM Gillian closely following, while supporting construction is continuing between Watsonia and Bulleen.
