Planting local for a lasting legacy

Back to Newsfeed

We’re continuing the legacy of the iconic River Red Gum that stands on the corner of Bridge Street and Manningham Road in Bulleen.

50 new River Red Gum trees grown from its seeds have been planted in Yarra River parklands nearby.

The trees were grown at a local Eltham nursery and planted in Yarra River parks including Banksia Park, Yarra Flats Park and Westerfolds Park.

Some of the trees are within eyeline of the original Bridge Street tree – which is estimated to be at least 300 years old.

The tree has great significance to the local community and the design for North East Link was updated in 2021 to avoid it.

A management plan is now in place to support its survival through construction.

The 50 new trees grown from its seeds will continue the legacy of this historic tree for many more generations to come.
