Originally from Bendigo, Chris Mitchell’s role as Bendigo and Echuca Line Upgrade project manager was a literal homecoming.
Excelling in maths and physics at school kick-started the possibility of an engineering career for Chris. Although he likes to think playing SimCity and Transport Tycoon may have been a factor.
We asked Chris, an engineer for more than 12 years, how he’d describe his role on the now-completed project to a 5-year-old:
‘When our bosses want to build new train stations and upgrade train tracks, I make sure they get built by looking at drawings, talking to people who use trains and making sure the work being built is right.’
The Bendigo and Echuca Line Upgrade has changed the way people more around the region.
The project has delivered new stations at Goornong, Huntly and Raywood, giving people in growing communities access to trains close to where they live, and better reliability.
Trains now run faster and more frequently between Bendigo and Echuca, reaching speeds of 130km/h between Epsom and Goornong and 100km/h between Goornong and Echuca.
