The Fyans Street roundabout and level crossing are gone for good, with the complex South Geelong intersection transformed following a 75-day closure of the road.
Fyans Street now features a streamlined road alignment, with the road continuing under the new rail bridge to the Breakwater Road roundabout.
The new 2,000 tonne rail bridge was moved into place during the winter blitz, with the embankments and duplicated track also installed over the last two months.
Artwork by Wadawurrung Traditional Owner and artist Kait James features on more than 200 concrete panels on the rail bridge approach walls, celebrating the Indigenous flora theme.
James based her design around the Silver Wattle that grows throughout Wadawurrung Country, particularly along the Barwon River, with the leaf of the silver wattle the main feature of the panels.
Works are continuing on the open space around the rail bridge, with new picnic facilities and rest areas to be available and connect with the new shared walking and cycling path in Spring.
Local drivers should allow time to adjust to the new road layout in the area, with access changes for Wood and Carr streets.
Changes include:
- new traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing at Fyans and Wood streets
- no right turn from Fyans Street into Wood Street
- no right turn from Fyans Street into Carr Street, or from Carr Street into Fyans Street
- a two-way entrance and exit at Martin Street.
