The new accessible pedestrian overpass is now in place at South Geelong Station.
The 47m, 80-tonne overpass was installed above the rail line by a 600-tonne Metcalf crane as part of major upgrades to the station.
The overpass will provide a link to the new second platform once the project is complete, with work continuing on lifts and ramps to make the overpass fully accessible.
Built by Sutcliffe Engineering in Hallam, the overpass was delivered in six pieces in early October and assembled on site.
Several local businesses were involved in its assembly, with Associated Rigging suppling cranes to lift and connect the six pieces together, and Geelong Roofing installing the roof.
The overpass installation has given the local community their first glimpse of artwork by local artist James Price, with his sport and community inspired design featured on the overpass exterior.
Three new station canopies – manufactured locally by Hanlon Industries in Corio – have also been installed at South Geelong to provide shelter for passengers on the new platform. The new station building is also taking shape, with steel roof and wall frames erected east of the current building,
At Marshall Station, lift shafts have been installed and works are continuing on steel framing for the new station building that will provide an enclosed waiting room for passengers.
Work is also progressing on the embankments that lead to the new rail bridge at Surf Coast Highway, with rail to be added to the new structure next year before the level crossing is removed.
