Plan ahead for works on Warrnambool and Geelong lines

The first sections of new track will be installed on the Warrnambool Line and at Waurn Ponds Station while coaches replace trains in April, an important milestone for these projects.

Track turnouts will be installed at both ends of the new crossing loop at Boorcan, critical to linking the new and existing track, which will allow more services to run on the Warrnambool Line.

More than 5,000 tonnes of ballast and 3,000 sleepers will be used to form the new 2.2 km crossing loop over coming months.

The crossing loop will make it easier for trains to pass each other in this section and allow services to recover from unexpected delays more quickly on the Warrnambool Line.

At Waurn Ponds, track turnouts will be installed, forming the first stage of track duplication between Waurn Ponds and South Geelong. More than 2,500 tonnes of ballast and 500 sleepers will be used for the second track at the station, to allow more services to be extended to and from Waurn Ponds.

Construction of the 180-metre-long second platform at Waurn Ponds Station will also begin, with Colac supplier Otway Precast delivering 40 pre-cast panels for installation during the disruption.

More than 20 regional suppliers are currently working on both projects, including McNaughton Excavations and Grampians Excavations who have been carrying out earthworks at both Boorcan and Waurn Ponds Station in preparation for the track installation.

Underground cabling for signalling upgrades will also take place during this time, as well as drainage improvements along the line, with works underway at Colac, Camperdown, Birregurra, Warncoort, Boorcan and Winchelsea.

Coaches will replace trains between Warrnambool and Geelong from Saturday 10 April to Sunday 18 April, with passengers asked to allow extra time and plan ahead.

Road users are asked to follow traffic management signage and allow extra travel time. Temporary speed reductions will also be in place along Boorcan and Oswells roads in Boorcan until Sunday 18 April.
