More Sunbury kids are learning about the importance of a road network in their community as Major Road Projects Victoria boosts the number of education sessions at local preschools.
The Sunbury Road Upgrade team recently helped local children slip into their littlest high-vis vests, and put on their small hard hats, as part of organised play and indoor learning session about roads in the community.
Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Member for Sunbury Josh Bull joined local pre-schoolers, educators and Sunbury Road Upgrade team members at Sunningdale Avenue Children’s Centre in Goonawarra, helping add a touch of fun and education about the vital work the project is doing in their community.
The Sunbury Road Upgrade team arrived with child-size safety vests and helmets for over an hour of construction-themed activities on Thursday 8 June.
The little apprentices enjoyed dressing up in their PPE to conduct a ‘Construction Investigation’ seek-and-find game, followed by a collaborative activity which involved building connections out of the blue foam building blocks, generating discussion about how roads connect the community.
At the end of the visit, the project team gave each child an activity take-home pack as a special memento of the day.
Once the upgrade is complete, everyone will enjoy safer and easier trips to Sunningdale Children’s Centre, which will have direct access to an additional lane in each direction on Sunbury Road, an upgraded Francis Boulevard intersection and improved walking and cycling paths bordered by new safety barriers.
In recent months, we’ve built new lanes between Shepherds Lane and Apex Park. We’ve begun building a new Jacksons Creek bridge and built and opened upgraded intersections at Francis Boulevard and Lancefield Road.
In May, as part of major works at Francis Boulevard, we built a new bus stop and installed a new shelter on Francis Boulevard – earlier this year we constructed a new bus stop at Lancefield Road.
Crews are preparing to commence laying the final layer of asphalt while continuing to rehabilitate the new and existing carriageways this winter, subject to weather, following several traffic switches so far this year.
We’re asphalting the existing lanes on Sunbury Road between Bulla-Diggers Rest/Loemans Road to Shepherads Lane and getting ready to prepare for the traffic switch.
By the end of June, we’ll have built the majority of shared user paths from Bulla-Diggers Rest/Loemans Roads to Origins Drive, which will be opened progressively throughout the remainder of this year.
We’ll complete the installation and construction of new drainage between Bulla-Diggers Rest/Loemans Roads to Shepherds Lane.
We’re asphalting the existing lanes on Sunbury Road between Bulla-Diggers Rest/Loemans Road to Shepherads Lane and getting ready to prepare for the traffic switch.
Sunbury Road Upgrade is delivering new traffic lanes and shared-use paths between Powlett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest Road, improving traffic flow and travel times for the more than 24,000 drivers who rely on the road every day.
The Sunbury Road Upgrade is scheduled to be completed by 2025.
