Major construction on a vitally needed road upgrade in Melbourne’s southeast – which will relieve bottlenecks, improve traffic flow and make journeys faster, safer and more reliable – will finish in October.
The Clyde Road Upgrade was planned to be finished by May 2027 but will be completed seven months ahead of schedule.
The overpass across the Princes Freeway in Berwick will be widened from six lanes to 10, and the Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard and Kangan Drive intersections will be upgraded to accommodate increased traffic volumes and improve freeway access.
The team successfully installed 14 bridge beams and 232 pre-cast concrete panels, which form the foundation for the additional lanes.
The expanded overpass will play a key role in improving traffic flow through the busy Clyde Road and Princes Freeway interchange, while also supporting future population growth, reducing travel times and directly stimulating the local economy by creating over 1,300 jobs.
The project has been funded by the Australian Government and delivered by the Victoria Government. When completed, it will improve access to jobs and services, including the nearby hospital and education precinct and Berwick Station, while making it safer and easier for locals to walk, cycle and drive with new shared-use paths.
The upgrade builds on other projects across the southeast, including the nearby Thompsons Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road Intersection Upgrade and the Pakenham Roads Upgrade.
Once major works are completed, finishing works will continue until the end of 2026, including final landscaping, lighting and asphalting.
