We’ve recently switched traffic onto the city-side of the new Doncaster Road bridge. In January 2026, we’ll demolish the old Doncaster Road bridge to allow construction to begin on the Ringwood-side of the new Doncaster Road.
To safely complete these works, the Eastern Freeway will be closed in both directions between Doncaster and Middleborough roads from 10pm, Wednesday 7 January to 5am, Monday 12 January 2026.
Crews will use this closure to do other works along the freeway, including installing drainage and on road technology, lifting steel beams into place at Bulleen and relocating high voltage cables under the freeway between Tram and Middleborough roads.
Eastern Freeway closure
A full closure of the Eastern Freeway will be in place from 10pm, Wednesday 7 January to 5am, Monday 12 January between Doncaster and Middleborough roads.
During this time, various freeway ramps, turning movements and bus stops will be closed to help ease traffic congestion. Street parking in both directions along Doncaster Road between Wetherby Road and High Street will also be closed.
Significant delays of up to 90 minutes are expected, with motorists encouraged to plan ahead and avoid the Eastern Freeway.
Motorists will also be allowed to use the bus lanes along Doncaster Road in both directions between the Eastern Freeway and Wetherby Road.
On road signage will be in place to guide motorists and commuters through the area.
To stay informed, road users can check the latest updates on the Eastern Freeway disruptions page and subscribe to receive SMS and email alerts.
We thank motorists and the community for their ongoing patience as we deliver these major upgrades to the Eastern Freeway.
