We’re upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology, Melbourne’s first express busway and a seamless connection to North East Link.
What’s happening
New walking and cycling bridges have been installed at Estelle Street, Bulleen and Heyington Avenue, Mont Albert North, to improve walking and cycling connections for the surrounding communities.
Before we open the new bridges to the public in late 2025, we’ll need to demolish some old infrastructure, as well as complete important finishing works on the bridge and surrounding path network. For some of these works, we’ll need to close the Eastern Freeway at times, overnight in October 2025.
We’ll make the most of time the freeway needs to be closed and complete other works along the Eastern Freeway, such as relocating utilities, building parts of the Doncaster Road bridge and installing smart on-road technology.
As we prepare for the next stage of Eastern Freeway upgrades, there will also be rolling overnight lane and ramp closures from Hoddle Street to Springvale Road, at times until late 2025.
Between Hoddle Street and Burke Road, overnight lane closures remain in place for site investigations ahead of major construction starting in 2026. Between Tram and Springvale roads, traffic barriers will be installed at night, with long term speed reductions in place.
Overnight closures
The Eastern Freeway will be closed overnight at times in October between Bulleen and Tram roads, in either 1 or both directions.
