The Eastern Freeway Upgrades has been through an extensive planning and approvals process.
In addition to overhauling one of Melbourne’s busiest freeways, the project will connect the upgraded Eastern Freeway with the new North East Link tunnels in Bulleen and a completed Ring Road in Greensborough.
To set consistent design and construction standards for these 3 city-shaping projects, initial planning approvals for North East Link, the M80 Ring Road Completion and the Eastern Freeway Upgrades were completed together.
The Eastern Freeway Upgrades will be delivered in 3 stages. Burke Road to Tram Road is currently in major construction. The final Urban Design and Landscape Plan (UDLP) is available below.
The upgrades between Hoddle Street to Burke Road and Tram Road to Springvale Road will start construction works in 2025.
Planning and designs for the remaining sections are progressing and initial designs will be released in the Urban Design and Landscape Plan public exhibition in late 2025.
