Melbourne's first dedicated busway
As part of North East Link and the Eastern Freeway Upgrades, we’re improving public transport in Melbourne’s east.
Melbourne’s first dedicated busway – the Eastern Busway – will deliver faster, more frequent, and more reliable trips to and from the city.
About the Eastern Busway
- 11 km of dedicated, express bus lanes along the Eastern Freeway between Doncaster Road and Hoddle Street
- Travel speeds up to 100 km/hr
- 30% faster travel times for more than 6 million bus trips a year – taking more passengers than the Upfield Line
- New Bulleen Park and Ride and upgraded Doncaster Park and Ride – doubling the number of parking spaces for express bus services along the Eastern Freeway
- Opening in 2028 with North East Link and the upgraded Eastern Freeway.
Bulleen Park and Ride
The first piece of the new Eastern Busway opened to passengers in April 2023, ready for Doncaster Park and Ride to be upgraded from early 2025.

Eastern Busway lanes
The Eastern Busway lanes will be built as part of a major overhaul of the Eastern Freeway.
Work to build the busway lanes from Doncaster Road to Burke Road is underway now as part of the first stage of the Eastern Freeway Upgrades: Burke Road to Tram Road.
The remaining section of busway lanes to Hoddle Street will be built as part of the next stage of the Eastern Freeway Upgrades: Hoddle Street to Burke Road. Designs for this section of the upgraded freeway, including bus lanes, will be exhibited for community feedback as we bring builders on board from 2025.
Doncaster Park and Ride
Designs to connect an upgraded Doncaster Park and Ride to the Eastern Busway were exhibited in September 2024, updated in response to community feedback and construction work is now underway.
