Project design

For the upgrades to the Eastern Freeway between Hoddle Street to Burke Road, we’ll build:

6km of new Eastern Busway lanes along the Eastern Freeway including access for local routes at Chandler Highway
4.7km of new and upgraded walking and cycling links including a new bridge over the Yarra River
6km of quieter road surfaces and 1.9km of new noise walls
one new lane each way from Chandler Highway to Burke Road.

Progress update

Traffic barriers are now in place between Hoddle Street and Burke Road with speeds reduced to 80km/h and changed traffic conditions.

To prepare for widening the freeway, we have been installing drainage and conduits for traffic management technology.

We’ve established safe work areas and built construction compounds at Burke Road, Chandler Highway and Yarra Bend Park.

To create space for future construction of the busway, we’ve realigned ramps at the Chandler Highway and Burke Road interchange, and moved traffic to the realigned ramps.

While we work, sections of the Main Yarra Trail will be realigned or closed, with detours in place. You may also notice construction vehicles and equipment in your area and changed conditions on local roads.
