PLANNING AND EARLY WORKS

Hoddle Street to Burke Road

Upgrading the Eastern Freeway building Melbourne’s first dedicated express busway and new walking and cycling links to the inner city.

Project design

For the upgrades to the Eastern Freeway between Hoddle Street and Burke Road, we’ll build:

  • 2 new freeway lanes from Chandler Highway to Burke Road and on-road technology to ease congestion
  • the final piece of the new Eastern Busway lanes along the Eastern Freeway including access for local routes at Chandler Highway
  • a new bridge over the Yarra River for better walking and cycling connections to the inner city and Yarra River parklands
  • approximately 6 km of new and upgraded walking and cycling trails to provide safer, more direct and more accessible routes for cyclists and pedestrians
  • new barriers to improve road safety

Progress update

Before major construction begins in 2026, we’ll exhibit an Urban Design and Landscape Plan (UDLP) for community feedback.

The UDLP will include architectural and landscape drawings and explain how the project design meets requirements developed in consultation with the community through the Environment Effects Statement (EES)  process.

You will be able to view and have your say on the designs for this stage of the Eastern freeway upgrades later this year.
