The Epping Road Upgrade has opened all lanes in a huge boost for travel through Melbourne’s north.
The 4km stretch of new and upgraded lanes opened in December 2025, delivering safer, smoother travel for the 35,000 drivers using the road daily between Wollert and Epping.
Major works on Epping Road have finished on schedule, delivering an upgrade that more than doubles the road’s capacity from Craigieburn Road East in the north to Memorial Avenue in the south.
The project has also improved 5 key intersections, installed traffic lights at Park Street, and upgraded pedestrian traffic lights at Epping Road.
Pedestrians and cyclists are benefiting from the upgrade’s new shared-use paths between Lyndarum Drive and Craigieburn Road East, improving local connections for active transport.
With major construction finished, crews will continue completing finishing works along Epping Road over the coming months. Temporary lane and side road closures will occur at times to protect workers and the community during this phase.
During major construction, the project removed over 70,000 tonnes of material including soil and asphalt then placed over 200,000 tonnes of various materials, equivalent in weight to around 90,000 dual-cab utes.
Crews also installed 6.8km of guardrail for the safety of road users and planted 102,000 native plants to support the corridor’s environmental values.
Crews have amassed nearly 900,000 work hours since construction kicked off in mid-2022, equivalent to nearly 450 years of standard working weeks
Cadets, apprentices and trainees worked over 24,000 hours on the project, reflecting the Victorian Government’s commitment to nurturing future talent.
Indigenous workers also played key roles delivering the project, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accounting for over three per cent of the total project hours worked.
In another boost for Indigenous people and their communities, the project also spent more than $13 million with certified Aboriginal businesses, 5 times the targeted spend.
