Homegrown graduate talent builds big on Craigieburn Road

A born-and-bred Craigieburn local is just one in another bumper graduate cohort from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds now working on Victoria’s Big Build.

Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) engineer Sajad Mehdi has joined the Craigieburn Road Upgrade project team, becoming one of 100 new graduates building big across the Big Build projects.

When Sajad was in primary school, he dreamed of being the one who would build big structures people would rely on. Now, he is applying a love of science and mathematics to do just that in the suburb where he grew up in as a Graduate, Civil Engineering at Major Road Projects Victoria.

As a proud Arab Muslim with Iraqi heritage, Sajad grew up with a love of soccer playing for Roxburgh Park as he watched his community grow and evolve over the past 20 years.

Starting out his career in residential development after university, Sajad says he always wanted to turn his mind to road projects and ultimately step onto the path of becoming a Project Manager. He fell into MRPV after accepting a graduate opportunity attached to the Craigieburn Road Upgrade this year – which has quickly become the perfect fit.

Sajad plays an important role in helping build a road project that will deliver extra lanes to improve safety and reliability for all road users in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

As part of this year’s Graduate Program intake, Sajad will undertake a two-year program featuring structured learning and development opportunities as well as career planning to prepare for the next step in his professional life. He will develop technical and workforce skills, working alongside industry leaders and learning from experts eager to help and guide the next generation of talent.

The Big Build Graduate Program is recognised by the Australian Association of Graduate Employers as one of the country’s best workplaces for graduates.

Job specialties across Victoria’s Big Build include engineering, graphic design, human resources, information systems, land planning and environment, and law. More than 1,600 graduates applied to be part of the 2023 cohort, with 154 making it through to hiring.

Applications to be part of the 2025 Victoria’s Big Build Graduate Program will open soon. Find out more about the program and subscribe for updates on our Graduate Programs page.

The Craigieburn Road Upgrade project is on track and scheduled for completion by 2025.
