A stunning new permanent public mural honouring Sunbury’s rich history and diversity is a step closer, with Sunbury local artist Ervin Molnar commissioned to create the artwork.
Mr Molnar’s appointment follows an EOI process led in collaboration with the Department of Transport and Planning, to paint the piece along the new Sunbury Road bridge underpass beside the Jacksons Creek. Ervin Molnar, who works primarily in paintings, will develop a 40-metre long and 5-metre high permanent public artwork as part of the Sunbury Road Upgrade. Ervin works from a studio at Diggers Rest near Sunbury, and married on the banks of Jacksons Creek after growing up in Canada.
A few months ago, we asked the community to help shape the artwork for the new bridge. The feedback highlighted the community’s desire to see a design that celebrates the local flora and fauna and tells the story of the Jacksons Creek. The design will draw on inspiration from Sunbury including strong local fauna and flora elements, with a nod to the town’s place as the birthplace of the Ashes Urn, with the surrounding town, heritage and community elements to be at the heart of the design.
Mr Molnar is developing the artwork for the retaining wall alongside a pedestrian and cycling underpass. The artwork will be painted onto the retaining wall using specialised paints over several weeks, and will be treated with an anti-graffiti coating to ensure it is protected against vandalism and can be enjoyed by the public for years to come. The underpass connects with a new shared user path from Goonawarra to the Jacksons Creek which will open by 2024, ensuring safer access for both cyclists and pedestrians. Landscaping work will be completed during the coming planting seasons.
Linking Goonawarra and emerging communities around Lancefield Road, the Jacksons Creek bridge is the gateway to Sunbury’s historical town centre.
Once completed, the Sunbury Road Upgrade will reduce traffic congestion, improve safety, and provide greater access to the Sunbury town centre.
