Major works are underway to build the Ison Road Extension in Werribee, which will help provide a vital new link to the Princes Freeway.
Crews have begun earthworks for the extension, which will connect with the Ison Road Overpass to form the link to the freeway.
The extension project will build a 1.3km, 4 lane road between the overpass and Geelong Road at the Werribee Main Road-Princes Freeway interchange.
The link will help enhance connectivity, improve safety and reduce congestion, particularly in central Werribee. With the overpass also under construction, drivers will be able to use the link by the end of 2026. Once complete, it will cater for over 29,000 daily journeys by 2036 to help meet the area’s growing transport needs.
The link will also include walking and cycling paths along the overpass and the extension to Geelong Road, boosting local active transport opportunities.
We'll build the extension on behalf of Wyndham City Council with construction partner Decmil.
The $80 million extension project is jointly funded by the Victorian Government and Wyndham City Council, with $60 million from the Victorian Government’s Growth Area Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) fund.
To build on the benefits of the new link, the Victorian and Commonwealth governments recently announced joint funding for the Werribee Main Road – Princes Freeway Interchange Upgrade.
This project will build an improved Geelong bound exit ramp and city-bound entry ramp, a new lane to the Werribee Main Road bridge and add traffic lights at key intersections.
These improvements are expected to cut peak travel times by over 10 minutes, increase capacity, and reduce bottlenecks and dangerous queuing in peak periods, making it safer and easier for the 10,000 motorists who use the interchange daily.
Planning work is continuing on the interchange upgrade. Construction timelines will be known once planning has progressed further.
