We’re upgrading the Princes Freeway and Werribee Main Road Interchange in Werribee to improve safety and reduce congestion.
Overview
The Princes Freeway and Werribee Main Road Interchange Upgrade will include:
- new signalised intersections at:
- Ison Road / Werribee Main Road
- Princes Freeway inbound on-ramp / Werribee Main Road
- Princes Freeway outbound off-ramp / William Thwaites Drive / Werribee Main Road.
- a new roundabout linking the Princes Freeway inbound off-ramp to Wests Road, Princes Highway and Maltby Bypass Service Centre
- additional lane on the existing Werribee Main Road bridge crossing the Princes Freeway
- an upgrade of Princes Freeway inbound on-ramp to 2 lanes
- an upgrade of Princes Freeway outbound off-ramp to 2 lanes
- a permanent speed reduction from 80km/h to 60km/h on Werribee Main Road between William Thwaites Dr and Ison Rd intersection.
The improvements at the interchange are expected to significantly improve journey reliability, particularly during peak periods.
The upgrades will also increase capacity, reduce congestion and minimise queuing.
The project builds on the benefits of the Ison Road Project, due for completion late 2026. Together, these projects will make travel in and around Werribee’s town centre easier and safer.
Construction will commence in early 2027 and be completed in late 2029.
Planning progress
In early 2025, the Federal and State Governments announced funding to deliver the Princes Freeway and Werribee Main Road Interchange Upgrade.
Planning is progressing, with detailed design and preparation works underway.
Later this year, we will undertake procurement to appoint a contractor to deliver the works.
Community and stakeholder engagement
We asked for community and business feedback on a upgrade to the Princes Freeway and Werribee Main Road Interchange via Engage Victoria. Thank you to everyone who took the time to contribute.
Feedback was considered in our planning and has helped us understand how people currently use the interchange, as well as their thoughts on access, efficiency, safety and improvements to the interchange that we should consider.
For further information on what we heard, download a PDF version of the summary below.
We will continue to keep the community informed as the project progresses and as we approach the start of construction.
