New upgraded traffic signals on Werribee Main Road
We've upgraded the temporary traffic signals that have been in place since mid 2025 on the Werribee Main Road bridge over the Princes Freeway. The new semi-permanent signals control traffic on all approaches to the intersection of the Werribee-bound Princes Freeway exit ramp and Werribee Main Road bridge.
These semi-permanent signals operate at all times to provide more certainty for drivers exiting the Princes Freeway to safely turn right towards Werribee.
This improved intersection is helping to reduce congestion on the freeway for Werribee-bound vehicles in the afternoon peak and helps to reduce queuing on the outbound Princes Freeway emergency lane during the afternoon peak and get drivers home sooner and safer.
Early works
We’re delivering some important upgrades earlier than planned, to support the community.
While the Princes Freeway and Werribee Main Road Interchange Upgrade is still in planning, several improvements are being delivered now through the Ison Road Project, which is currently under construction.
This will help manage current traffic demands, reduce disruption, and prepare the road network for future upgrades.
What’s happening now:
- Geelong Road/Princes Highway, Ison Road and Werribee Main Road intersection upgrade: with more traffic expected when the Ison Road Project opens later this year, we’re upgrading the intersection and adding traffic signals to improve safety and traffic flow, while preparing for future changes as part of the Princes Freeway and Werribee Main Road Interchange Upgrade.
- New roundabout linking the Princes Freeway city-bound off-ramp to Wests Road, Geelong Road/Princes Highway and Maltby Bypass Service Centre: this roundabout is part of the Princes Freeway and Werribee Main Road Interchange Upgrade and is being delivered early through the Ison Road Project improving traffic flow and safety through this intersection.
