Major works kick off in Altona Meadows

Back to Newsfeed

Major construction is ramping up on the Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade in Altona Meadows, with works intensifying around and beneath the Point Cook Road bridge.

To safely deliver the next phase of works, the Point Cook Road bridge will close to vehicles in both directions from 10pm Sunday 28 June until mid-September.

Clearly signed detours will be in place for the duration of the closure, with electronic signs providing live travel times to help motorists choose the best route.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and follow traffic management directions, with delays of up to 30 minutes expected during peak periods.

Access to Aircraft Station will remain open via Aviation Road and Railway Avenue.

During the closure, crews will:

  • widen Point Cook Road approaching the future signalised intersection
  • construct the new outbound freeway exit loop ramp beneath the bridge
  • complete key earthworks and structural works supporting the upgraded intersection.

While crews build the new bridge approach and the central section of the upgraded intersection, vehicles won’t be able to safely travel across the bridge.

Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to access the bridge throughout the closure, with traffic controllers on site to help guide people on foot and on bikes or scooters safely through the area.

The project team will continue working closely with local traders to minimise impacts and encourage the community to continue shopping locally during construction.

The Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade will replace the existing roundabout with traffic lights, add a new outbound freeway exit ramp connecting via a loop road, widen Point Cook Road and Central Avenue at the intersection, and deliver new pedestrian crossings and improved walking and cycling connections. The upgrade will reduce congestion, improve safety and provide more reliable access to the Princes Freeway, local businesses and Aircraft Station.
