Roadside planting day at Marshall adds a native green tinge

A community planting day has added a native green tinge to part of the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade.

Local children and residents joined forces with Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) and construction partner BildGroup for the roadside planting day at Marshall on 28 March.

Each participant was given a ‘planter party bag’ containing a recyclable planting trowel, gloves and a bucket hat.

The participants were also provided with 150 tube stock plants, along with information about the local environment and why certain species were included in the upgrade’s landscaping.

MRPV expects to plant a total 84,000 native plants alongside Barwon Heads Road as part of the upgrade.

The planting day focused on a section between Marshalltown and Reserve roads, where new lanes opened on 8 March. This section is about half the length of the total upgrade.

The upgrade is adding 4km of lanes between Belmont and Charlemont to provide safer, more reliable travel.

Other improvements include upgraded intersections, 4km of new shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists, and the replacement of a level crossing with a bridge over Marshall’s rail line.

Due for completion this year, the upgraded section of Barwon Heads Road will cater for up to 44,000 daily journeys by 2031.
