Switching to the next phase of the Sunbury Road Upgrade

Back to Newsfeed

Motorists are getting a taste of brand-new lanes on Sunbury Road, as the area’s largest road upgrade takes a huge step towards widening the key arterial from 2 to 4 lanes.

Drivers are in for a smoother ride as Spring approaches, with 2.5 kilometres of the new lanes starting to open to traffic from August.

As works progress on the Sunbury Road Road Upgrade, crews will be moving traffic onto sections of the outer new lanes until late September to set up new work areas and complete upgrades to the center median at intersections.

Traffic on Sunbury Road has been shifted onto the newly built sections of road, between Bulla-Diggers Rest/Loemans Road to Maplestone Drive.

While crews undertake this work, motorists should observe changed traffic arrangements, including speed reductions to 40km/h, and be aware of local road and access closures. One lane in each direction will be open along Sunbury Road while we continue to build the extra lanes and upgrade key intersections.

These traffic arrangements will be in place until late September. Access continues to be maintained for emergency services in the area.

Crews are continuing to work on upgrades to two major intersections – with traffic lights added to the intersection of Lancefield Road and Francis Boulevard and lights to also be installed at the entrance to the Sunbury Eco-Hub.

Construction of the new bridge over Jacksons Creek is powering ahead, due for completion by the end of the year.

As well as the intersection upgrades, drivers will benefit from an extra lane in each direction between Powlett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest/Loemans Road helping reduce congestion in the area.

A new path for cyclists and pedestrians has been built along Sunbury Road from the Jacksons Creek bridge to Goonawarra – part of 8km of cycling and pedestrian paths being built across the Sunbury Road Upgrade.

Sunbury Road connects key current and emerging residential areas in the northwest to important routes and nearby freeways, carrying more than 24,000 vehicles each day. Its upgrade will improve journey times, slash congestion and keep cyclists and pedestrians safe from busy traffic.

The Sunbury Upgrade will provide better connections between communities adjacent to Sunbury Road and the Sunbury town centre providing easier access to jobs and services whilst also increasing the liveability of the area.

The upgrade will increase the capacity of the road and key intersections, accommodating for the future residential and commercial growth of the region.

The Sunbury Road Upgrade is jointly funded by the Victorian and Australian governments.
