Taking a short trip down the highway from Pakenham to their new home in Clyde North, crushed rock and concrete barriers from the Pakenham Roads Upgrade has been reused on the Thompsons and Berwick-Cranbourne Road Intersection Upgrade.
Approximately 4000 tonnes of crushed rock has been saved from going to landfill and we’re also reusing 354 concrete barriers from the project on the upcoming Thompsons and Berwick-Cranbourne Road Intersection Upgrade.
These materials have been used as part of the project site compound, which was recently set up on the north east corner of the intersection ahead of major works starting later this year.
As part of the Victorian Big Build’s Recycled First Policy, these initiatives aim to integrate recycling and reuse into all levels of a project’s lifespan to help grow domestic recycling capabilities and fuel innovation.
Crews have commenced early works to remove trees and vegetation in preparation for relocating underground utilities. From late August until January 2026, the westbound leg of the intersection will be closed as crews work to upgrade drainage and build the new carriageway and left turn slip lane.
The Thompsons and Berwick-Cranbourne Road Intersection Upgrade will reduce travel times, improve safety and cater for the area’s rapidly growing population. This project builds on other Victorian Big Build projects completed in the south east in recent years and will also complement works underway on the Clyde Road Upgrade once both projects are completed.
