A major milestone’s just been hit on the M80 Ring Road Completion, with traffic driving on the Watsonia Road landscaped bridge for the first time.
A month long closure on Elder street included a blitz of works with kerbing, road paving and storm water drainage to be completed, before crews finalised 4,900 tonnes of asphalt, laid in 6 days, to get the new road section ready for traffic.
This allowed the project team to switch traffic on Greensborough Highway out onto the Watsonia Road landscaped bridge, unlocking works area where crews can begin constructing the future connection to the tunnel.
When complete, the Elder Street and Watsonia Road landscaped bridges will keep local traffic separate from the express lanes into the tunnel, making travel around Watsonia easier for the community.
The new walking and cycling path from Elder Street to the pedestrian crossing on Greensborough Highway is also complete, ensuring locals have access to Watsonia Station and shops in the area.
This milestone restores a key connection for locals in Watsonia and keeps traffic in the staged approach to new and upgraded roads in this corridor.
The M80 Ring Road Completion will create seamless connections to the new North East Link tunnels, that will provide a direct route away from local roads to the Eastern Freeway and includes upgrades to the M80 Ring Road interchange and Grimshaw Street intersection.
