Overview

We’re completing the M80 Ring Road, with 5 new lanes and smart technology from Plenty Road to a new M80 interchange. The Ring Road will seamlessly connect to the new North East Link tunnels and move through-traffic under a new Grimshaw Street interchange. Two landscaped bridges will make it easier for locals to get to the Watsonia station, shops and community spaces.

The M80 Ring Road Completion will take 19,000 cars and trucks off Greensborough Road a day and give local roads back to local people.

The M80 Ring Road Completion will be timed to open around the same time as the North East Link tunnels from Watsonia to Bulleen and the Eastern Freeway Upgrades from Hoddle Street to Springvale Road.

The M80 Ring Road Completion also follows other major upgrades to the M80 over the past decade, with additional lanes added, new on and off ramps and bridges and a new smart freeway lane management system to better manage traffic flow already delivered from Western Highway to Plenty Road.

In response to community feedback, we're building:

  • Improved designs for interchanges at the M80 Ring Road and Grimshaw Street with more space for trees and plants
  • 10km of new and upgraded walking and cycling links, part of the 34km of walking and cycling links being delivered for the north east on the North East Link tunnels and the Eastern Freeway Upgrade projects, including:
    • better locations for new walking and cycle bridges at Macorna Street in Watsonia North, and Nell Street in Watsonia
    • a wider, brighter walking and cycle underpass at Yando Street, Greensborough
    • 2 wide landscaped bridges at Watsonia Road and Elder Street to deliver the connections to Watsonia Station and shops local people have told us they need
  • improvements to Trist Street Reserve, Watsonia and AK Lines Reserve, Watsonia North after construction
  • keeping two-way local road access between Nell Street and Greensborough Road, Watsonia
  • new noise walls designed to meet Victoria’s toughest 63 decibel traffic noise standard, plus a new, quieter 58 decibel standard at night – a first for a road project in Victoria.
