As part of Victoria’s Big Build, the Victorian Government has delivered more train services, less crowding and better connections on the Hurstbridge Line through the Hurstbridge Line Duplication project.
North East Link works on the Hurstbridge Line
As part of North East Link, we’re completing the M80 Ring Road in Greensborough.
The new road connection to North East Link will be built over the Hurstbridge Line between Grimshaw and Elder streets in Watsonia.
To create the space needed, the existing rail tunnel will be extended to nearly half a kilometre long.
The nearby Grimshaw Street bridge over the rail line will also be rebuilt and widened.
As part of these works, we're upgrading almost 5km of tracks, gantries, wires and signalling - some more than 100 years old - between Macleod and Greensborough Stations. These upgrades will make train services safer and more reliable for Hurstbridge Line passengers.
What’s coming up?
We’re continuing to extend the rail tunnel under Greensborough Highway and build the new Grimshaw Street rail bridge. From 8:30pm Monday 30 June to last service Friday 25 July, buses will replace trains on sections of the Hurstbridge Line while we work 24 hours a day in the rail corridor.
We’ll be working during the day and night between Grimshaw and Elder streets. Works include:
- installing traffic barriers, fencing and lighting to establish temporary works areas
- excavation and earthworks to install drainage
- boring holes and pouring concrete to build columns for the tunnel and bridge
- cutting, digging and drilling to relocate utility services under the rail line
- installing new overhead cables near the Grimshaw Rail Bridge
- delivering and installing large concrete segments to build the tunnel and bridge
- building retaining walls to support the new structures installing a new tunnel services building near Watsonia Station
- constructing footpaths and stairways along the rail line from Watsonia Station to Grimshaw Street
- installing new track and line equipment.
