The new M80 Ring Road interchange will link the Ring Road and Greensborough Bypass to the North East Link tunnels in Watsonia. Connections to and from Greensborough Road and Grimshaw Street will be kept for local trips.
As part of North East Link, we're completing the M80 Ring Road in Greensborough. Work started on the M80 Ring Road Completion in 2023 and it is scheduled for completion in 2028.
Two new interchanges at the M80 Ring Road and Grimshaw Street will ease congestion and slash travel times, with dedicated lanes for local trips and express lanes to the North East Link tunnels.
The new interchange will seamlessly connect the M80 Ring Road to the Greensborough Bypass, an upgraded Greensborough Road for local trips and express lanes to the new North East Link Tunnels in Watsonia.
A smarter lane layout for the new M80 Ring Road interchange has created more space for trees, plants and new wetlands. The wetlands will store and clean rain water and create a new habitat area between Plenty Gorge and Plenty River.
A wider and safer Macorna Street bridge will improve local connections for pedestrians and cyclists. In response to community feedback, we’ve moved the bridge further away from homes and created more space for trees and plants.
New brighter and wider walking and cycling underpasses will be built at Yando Street, Greensborough and Kempston Street, Watsonia to help locals get around. The Kempston Street underpass will also be kept open for cars.
What’s coming up?
In June, we’ll continue working on the M80 Ring Road entry and exit ramps at Plenty Road as we prepare to build new lanes. This work will require nightly traffic changes and two weekend closures of the M80 Ring Road entry ramp from Plenty Road.
Traffic management and signage will be in place to safely guide road users through the area. When complete, the Greensborough-bound entry ramp from Plenty Road will have three lanes, improving traffic flow.
During this period, we’ll continue installing new permanent noise walls on the M80 Ring Road and along Greensborough Bypass, near Sellars Street. These noise walls will help reduce road and construction noise for nearby residents.
Construction of the M80 Ring Road Altona-bound and Diamond Creek Road bridges across the Yando Street underpass are progressing well on the Greensborough Bypass and will be completed later this year.
