We’re removing the traffic lights at the existing M80 Ring Road intersection to ease congestion and slash travel times.
The new interchange will seamlessly connect the M80 Ring Road to the Greensborough Bypass, an upgraded Greensborough Road, and will add express lanes to the new North East Link Tunnels in Watsonia.
The M80 Ring Road Interchange design minimises the height of ramps and overpass bridges to mitigate visual and noise impacts to the residents.
Five new lanes and smart technology from Plenty Road to a new M80 Ring Road Interchange will also deliver faster, safer trips for drivers.
Works in the area will increase significantly as we continue to build the new interchange and extra lanes on the M80 Ring Road and Greensborough Bypass.
What’s been done
In September and October, we moved traffic onto new lanes along the M80 Ring Road and the temporary intersection at the M80 Ring Road Interchange. This will be in place for up to 18 months, so we can continue building new Interchange structures and bridge foundations safely behind barriers.
As part of this traffic switch, drivers are using newly built roads for the first time along the M80 Ring Road and Greensborough Bypass, including an upgraded M80 Ring Road exit to Hurstbridge.
We’ve also been building road bridges that will form the new connection to the M80 Ring Road from Grimshaw Street.
What's next?
From November to late 2026, we’ll continue working on key structures that will make up the new M80 Interchange including ramps, bridges, underpasses and flyovers.
We’ll also start works to build the new, wider Macorna Street walking and cycling bridge, which will be built in stages to reduce disruption. There’ll be shared-use path closures in place at times during works.
You can expect lane and road closures at times on the M80 Ring Road and Greensborough Bypass while we build the new and improved Interchange and upgraded lanes.
We’re continuously refining our plans and approach to construction to minimise disruption to the community, and we will notify you of any changes to the way you travel ahead of time. Detours will be in place while we work, and we’ll share more details with the community closer to the date to help you prepare for these changes.
