Upgrade works for M80 Ring Road and Greensborough Bypass

Back to Newsfeed

New traffic arrangements on the M80 Ring Road Interchange will be in place for up to 18 months while crews continue building the interchange safely behind barriers.

The works are part of the new M80 Ring Road interchange, that will seamlessly connect to the North East Link tunnels, with express lanes and better local connections, fixing the missing link in our freeway network.

Drivers planning to use the M80 Ring Road near Greensborough during the weekend of 19-22 September are encouraged to plan ahead and avoid the area, with delays of up to 60 minutes expected.

The M80 freeway will close in both directions between Plenty Road and Greensborough Bypass from 7.30pm, Friday 19 September until 5.30am, Monday 22 September.

During this time, Greensborough Bypass will also be closed in both directions between Grimshaw Street and the Civic Drive/Diamond Creek Road roundabout during the same time.

Detours will be in place via Grimshaw Street, Plenty Road and Diamond Creek Road.

The closure will allow crews to work safely around the clock on laying asphalt and line marking, removing and installing new traffic lights, lighting, and signage as part of a traffic switch.

Night works will continue on sections of the M80 Ring Road and Greensborough Bypass over the coming months with lane and carriageway closures at times.

Once complete, the M80 Ring Road Completion will take 19,000 cars and trucks a day off Greensborough Road with through traffic passing under Grimshaw Street, Elder Street and Watsonia Road – giving local roads back to local people.

The M80 Ring Road Completion is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.

More information about this weekend’s closures, including detours are available on the Disruptions map.
