As we build Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East, it’s a great opportunity to explore your local neighbourhood and try new activities while helping local businesses. Shops and restaurants remain open during construction, and there are plenty of great things to discover.

Rise and shine

Whitehorse Road, Market and Main Streets, Box Hill | About a 10 minute walk from Stop 62 on the 75 tram.

Start the day on a bright note with a visit to The Penny Drop on Whitehorse Road. With plenty of restaurant seating, it’s a lovely place to catch up with friends for breakfast or lunch.

Café Faducci is perfect for grabbing a coffee and croissant in the Box Hill mall, Chill Chill Café offers delicious ice brews and Milk Flower is renowned for its dessert and yoghurt-infused drinks.

Ever wanted to try martial arts?

When the sun has set and you’re after a nice meal, Tina’s Noodle Kitchen is well-known for its signature dishes, including hot and spicy Sichuan cuisine and a variety of rice noodle soups. Construction underway in Burwood and Box Hill

As you explore these fantastic local shops, restaurants and activities, you’ll notice plenty of construction happening around Burwood and Box Hill.

Crews are moving underground services, building a tunnel boring machine launch site in Burwood and a temporary bridging structure on Whitehorse Road to keep traffic moving during construction.

While we build SRL East we’re working hard to minimise impacts on the community and local businesses and traders.

SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill will deliver 26km of twin tunnels and 6 brand new underground stations, connecting employment, health and education centres in Melbourne’s east and south east, with trains taking passengers in 2035.

This city-shaping project will not only transform our public transport system, it will also deliver more homes where they’re needed – with a long-term vision for 70,000 extra homes in the areas around the 6 SRL East stations, including more housing choice on the doorstep of Deakin University and in the heart of vibrant Box Hill.

In Burwood, the new SRL station will be a community hub, with shops and restaurants attracting students, residents and visitors. Walking and cycling paths will connect natural features including Gardiners Creek and Lundgren Chain Reserve.The underground SRL station in Box Hill will connect to the existing station and be delivered alongside new public space the size of Federation Square – including a linear park and a pedestrian boulevard linking Whitehorse Road to Box Hill Gardens.
