Local families have celebrated the official opening of Burwood’s newest park with kids’ activities, face painting and free food and coffee.

The brand-new park and playground along Lundgren Chain Reserve have been delivered as part of the first phase of works for Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East in Burwood.

The event was an opportunity for youngsters to test out the playground with swings, slides and climbing equipment - all surrounded by soft surfaces and gardens.

Further along Lundgren Chain Reserve at Highbury Road, a new barbeque area will also open soon.

Construction of SRL East between Cheltenham and Box Hill is powering ahead, creating up to 8000 direct jobs - with 800 local jobs in the first phase of works now underway.

The new park and playground, with accessible equipment for children of all abilities, was built after extensive consultation with the community, providing an alternative to the Sinnott Street Reserve which is needed for the construction of the brand new SRL station at Burwood.

Works are now underway to set up the construction site in Burwood, ahead of the start of tunnelling in 2026.

SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill will deliver huge benefits for Burwood, with a direct train line to Deakin University for the first time, and better connections to employment, hospitals and jobs.
