Two brand new recreational spaces for the community to enjoy are now open in Clayton while major construction of Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East is underway.
The sites replace community space under the elevated rail line which is needed to build the new underground SRL East station. The 2 spaces deliver more than 2000 square metres of open space, providing 20% more open space and 46 new trees for locals.
Both spaces are on Haughton Road, within walking distance of the existing Clayton Station.
Feedback from the Clayton Community Space consultation has informed the design of the areas – which feature play areas, exercise equipment, picnic tables, seating and walking tracks.
Walking and cycling tracks to the popular Djerring Trail have been upgraded, with new signage and lighting to improve safety, and plenty of bike parking hoops.
SRL East will deliver 6 new underground stations at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill. Clayton will become a transport super hub, with trains travelling in 4 directions – improving connections to jobs, health and education across Melbourne and Gippsland.
SRL is about how our city and state grow, and grow well. More quality and affordable homes will be built in the areas around the new SRL stations, allowing more young people to live in the suburbs where they grew up.
Trains will be running on SRL East in 2035, slashing travel times and easing congestion – a trip from Clayton to Southland Westfield will take just 12 minutes, saving 28 minutes.
