Building a future for women in construction

Back to Newsfeed

We’re kick-starting careers in construction for young women, with 4 Victorian high school girls completing an innovative trainee program this year – which allowed them to work on Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East while completing their VCE.

Sarina Yim from Lyndale Secondary College (left) and Bijana Tarrosa from Cranbourne Secondary College (right) are 2 of the graduates of the NextGen Construct program. As part of the program, they’ve been working on SRL sites 2 days a week for the past 2 years, gaining valuable hands-on experience.

Bijana is now preparing to study civil engineering, while Sarina has an ongoing role on the SRL project.

Sarina said the program helped her understand construction and she enjoyed the workplace diversity and culture.

Bijana said the program showed there is a lot of support and encouragement within the industry for females to step up.
