A colourful and engaging new promotional campaign is brightening up Clayton and supporting local businesses, as construction gets underway on Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East.
Locals and visitors are encouraged to ‘Discover Clayton’ with fantastic specials and discounts on offer as part of a new trader support program.
Backed by Suburban Rail Loop Authority, around 30 businesses along Clayton Road, Dunstan Street and Carinish Road are offering vouchers to reward shoppers, diners and customers for shopping local.
Signage and bollards necessary for construction have been splashed with colour – providing passers-by with information about the city-shaping project and encouraging them to continue supporting their favourite cafes, bakeries, grocery stores and more.
“Our French Crepes are the best in south east Melbourne – in our mind!” – Chris, owner of Golden Pancake Roll.
Initial works for SRL East began in June, with workers using a tiny, remote-controlled tunnel boring machine (TBM) to dig under the streets of Clayton and realign a 630m sewer pipe, ahead of major works.
The micro-tunnelling technology is specially designed to minimise community disruption, however some lane closures will remain in place until November, while works are underway. The mini TBM has been working along Dunstan Street and is now under Clayton Road.
Consultation with locals and traders continues, with more than 3000 residential properties and businesses in Clayton updated and notified about the SRL East works. Construction of SRL East will create up to 8000 jobs, with trains running from Cheltenham to Box Hill by 2035 – slashing travel times and easing congestion. A trip between Cheltenham and Clayton will take less than 10 minutes.
The SRL transport super hub at Clayton will be one of the busiest stations on the network, connecting passengers to services on the Cranbourne/Pakenham and Gippsland lines and improving access to medical research facilities and hospitals in the growing health precinct.
