Clayton

The SRL East station at Clayton will become a major interchange, with trains travelling in 4 different directions, providing faster and more convenient transport to key destinations across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

The transport super hub will connect metropolitan and regional train services on the Cranbourne/Pakenham and Gippsland Lines – improving access to leading medical research and hospitals in the growing health precinct.

Frequent services every few minutes will mean passengers can turn up and go when the new rail line is operating by 2035. It’ll take just 3-4 minutes between stations – a journey from Clayton to the Cheltenham station to go shopping at Southland will take just 7 minutes.

What's happening now?

Early construction on SRL East started in June 2022 and is powering ahead.

Planning for the area around the new underground station at Clayton is now in its early stages, in consultation with the local council and community.

From 3 December 2023 to 3 March 2024, we sought community feedback on the draft precinct visions for the areas around each new SRL East station. These draft visions build on the priorities and feedback gathered over several years. The draft visions identify areas of opportunity, preliminary ideas and draft precinct plans that connect the place today to what it could look like in the future.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback via the online survey. A report summarising what we heard and how it is being considered will be released in the coming weeks.

What's next?

We are continuing to refine the precinct plans to ensure the SRL East precincts are thriving centres with quality housing options, services and job opportunities close to home.

SRL will be back out in the community shortly to get your feedback on the next steps being taken to realise the vision for Clayton.

The areas around the SRL stations will help people live locally – with open and green space, playgrounds, schools, jobs, universities, TAFEs, and health services all closer to home.

Planning for the 6 SRL East neighbourhoods is now underway. There will be many opportunities over the next few years to have your say on the future of Clayton both online and in person.

The new station at Clayton will be located north of Carinish Road and the existing Clayton Metro station. The underground SRL station will have 2 levels and be fully accessible for all passengers via lifts and escalators.

The station is proposed to have 2 entrances — east and west of Clayton Road — and passengers will be able to easily interchange with the existing Clayton Station. The new station will be connected to the existing station at Clayton via an elevated walkway.

The station will include buildings for ticketing and customer facilities, potential retail spaces, extensive undercover bike parking, as well as places for operational equipment and emergency and safety infrastructure.

Clayton will become a transport super hub, connecting regional Victorians on the Gippsland corridor to the loop and it will be one of Melbourne's busiest metropolitan stations, with trains travelling in 4 different directions. The interchange with the existing Clayton Metro station will be a convenient 'Paid to Paid' link.

The new station platform will sit around 18m below ground level and be accessible by lifts and escalators.
