Connecting suburbs
SRL will transform our public transport network – better connecting Victorians to employment, hospitals, universities and each other.
Three transport super hubs at Clayton, Broadmeadows and Sunshine will open up access to Melbourne’s suburbs for regional Victorians, who won’t have to travel through the CBD to get where they need to go.
SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill is now under construction and will deliver 6 new underground stations at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill, opening up access to key employment, education, entertainment and retail destinations in Melbourne’s east and south east.
Connections between SRL stations and the existing stations at Cheltenham, Glen Waverley, Clayton and Box Hill will be fast and easy – passengers will not have to tap on and off.
SRL will deliver direct train services for the first time to Monash University and the Deakin University Burwood campus, making the commute faster and easier for tens of thousands of staff and students.
World-leading health services will be easier to access, with the station at Clayton on the doorstep of the Monash Medical Precinct, and the station at Box Hill within walking distance of the Box Hill Hospital.
The thriving entertainment and retail hubs of Glen Waverley and Cheltenham will be more accessible than ever, with the new SRL stations to become vibrant public spaces.
Tunnelling on SRL East starts in 2026, with trains taking passengers in 2035.
More homes
As Melbourne’s population grows, finding an affordable home close to work, schools and world-class public transport is harder than ever.
As an integrated transport and planning project, Suburban Rail Loop will help shape how Melbourne grows in the decades ahead – helping our city and state meet the challenges of population growth and housing.
Locals have supported our vision because it makes sense to have more homes close to transport, jobs and services, and more options for their kids to settle locally.
Structure planning is now underway for the SRL East stations at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill. Draft structure plans will go on public exhibition in 2025, with another opportunity for the community and councils to again have their say.
This is about change over time – not overnight, with a long-term vision for 70,000 more homes above and around the 6 SRL East stations, along with more than 230,000 extra jobs.
Creating jobs
Construction of SRL East and SRL North is creating thousands of jobs, and creating a pipeline of opportunities for the state’s highly skilled construction sector and suppliers.

SRL will also create hundreds of opportunities for women, disadvantaged Victorians and First Nations peoples.
The world’s first all-women tunnel boring machine crew will start work in 2027, helping carve out the twin tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley and break down barriers and create new pathways for women in construction.
