In 2018, the need was identified for an orbital suburban rail line to connect suburbs, regions, jobs, health and education, with SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill earmarked for priority delivery.
More than 4 years of planning and design work helped identify the locations of the 6 underground stations and route for the 26km twin tunnels.
Since 2019, we have received feedback and talked to more than 30,000 people both online and in person.
SRL East will deliver huge benefits - initially connecting around 70,000 passengers every day to key destinations with faster and more reliable public transport.
SRL will help deliver Plan Melbourne’s vision of a ‘city of centres’, with increased investment, new local projects and thoughtful urban planning in the broader areas around the new stations helping to reshape how Melbourne grows in the decades ahead. Planning for these areas is in its early stages.
