Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) is the biggest infrastructure investment in Victorian history. The new 90km rail line and stations in key employment, health, education and retail centres will transform our public transport system and deliver enormous social benefits over many decades for all Victorians.

Beyond the rail infrastructure and cross-suburb travel connections, SRL will slowly reshape Melbourne from a city centred around a single CBD to a ‘city of centres’ – attracting more businesses and people to the broader station areas and creating more jobs in Melbourne’s middle suburbs closer to where people live.

Victoria is expected to grow to 11.2 million people by 2056 and Greater Melbourne will reach around 9 million people – a similar size to London today. SRL is an opportunity to get ahead of the curve – recalibrating where and how our city grows in the decades ahead.

Greater investment, thoughtful urban planning and local projects that build on the character and qualities of the local communities will ensure they continue to be vibrant, safe and attractive neighbourhoods as Melbourne grows. These will include new and improved open and public space, tree planting, more walking and cycling paths, retail and hospitality areas and plazas.

Construction has now started on SRL East and SRL Airport.

SRL Airport will be the first stage completed. Extending from Melbourne Airport to Sunshine, SRL Airport will be delivered by 2029.

SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill is also underway, with the new rail line taking passengers by 2035.
