SRL will transform our public transport system and deliver enormous social and economic benefits for all Victorians. As both a transport and planning project, SRL will deliver a new 90km rail line circling Melbourne, via Melbourne Airport, and up to 15 new stations in key employment, health, education and retail centres. It will slash travel times and create a long pipeline of jobs and training opportunities.

Beyond the rail infrastructure and travel connections, SRL will slowly help reshape Melbourne from a city centred around a single CBD, to a ‘city of centres’ – attracting more businesses, retail activity and housing to the areas around each station and creating more jobs in established areas where people want to live.

Victoria is expected to grow to around 11 million people by the 2050s, while Greater Melbourne will reach around 9 million people – a similar size to London today. SRL is an opportunity to get ahead of the curve – recalibrating where and how our city grows in the decades ahead.

SRL will help deliver a range of quality housing options, as well as schools, parks and playgrounds. All on the doorstep of a new train station and turn-up-and-go rail network, with healthcare, universities, shopping and employment centres within easy reach.

With $14 billion provided by the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments, construction of SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill started in June 2022, and trains will be taking passengers by 2035.
