Discovering diggers and dinosaurs in Clayton

Back to Newsfeed

With works on Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East well underway in Clayton, we gave the inquisitive kids at Goodstart Early Learning Centre a special ‘show and tell’ and a tour of the Dunstan Street construction site.

SRL engineers talked all things tunnels and diggers, then our young construction enthusiasts shared their ideas about what might be lurking underground near SRL’s future transport super hub.

We’re told to keep an eye out for treasure, dinosaurs and interesting rocks while our tiny tunnel boring machine helps to move utilities in preparation for major construction.

With trains running on SRL East by 2035, these youngsters in Clayton will be in their final years of high school, and some of the first to benefit from SRL and the improved connections it will provide to education, health and jobs.

Engaging with local communities is a key part of the design, development and construction of SRL – providing support for residents and businesses while we build SRL East.

Since February, we’ve had more than 30 meetings about the works, and contact with 3000 residents and traders.

SRL East will slash travel times, with a journey between Cheltenham and Clayton to take less than 10 minutes – creating direct connections to vital health and medical facilities including Monash Medical Centre.

It will also deliver more jobs closer to where people live, with employment in Clayton set to almost triple to 57,500 jobs when SRL East and SRL North are complete.

Construction of SRL East is well underway, creating up to 8000 direct jobs, and delivering 6 underground stations at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill – linked by 26km twin tunnels.
