Drilling towards construction

Back to Newsfeed

It’s a huge year for Suburban Rail Loop (SRL), with construction of SRL East between Cheltenham and Box Hill about to start. You might have noticed plenty of activity at Clayton in recent weeks – and there’ll be more soon.

Early works on SRL East will create up to 800 direct jobs as we prepare sites for the launch of tunnel boring machines, move and protect underground services like sewers, and make some changes to ground conditions and roads.

In preparation, we’ve undertaken a huge program of geotechnical investigations, and on Clayton Road, we’ve been using some pretty flash equipment to deliver the goods.

A state-of-the-art sonic drilling rig is our go-to piece of kit for this specialised work.

Sonic drilling is an advanced form of drilling workers are using to ensure work is done faster and more efficiently – minimising disruption for the community and motorists.

Workers have so far drilled more than 15kms of ground at nearly 800 sites – working more than a million hours.

The SRL station at Clayton will be a transport super hub, with trains travelling in four different directions, connecting passengers from the Cranbourne and Pakenham Lines and the Gippsland region to SRL.
