Excavation underway of the SRL station in Clayton

Back to Newsfeed

Excavation of the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) train station in Clayton is now well underway.

Crews are carving out the underground space for the station (the station box)  -  digging and  installing large steel beams to support the walls as they go. When they reach the bottom, they’ll pour a concrete base slab.

Four excavators are being used – 2 operating within the station box and 2 long-reach excavators at ground level – and 2 huge cranes are installing the steel beams.

An underground connection between the existing Clayton station and the future SRL Clayton station will also be excavated beneath a concrete roof slab, making it fast and easy for passengers to interchange between stations.

SRL East will deliver 6 brand new underground stations at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill, connected by 26km of twin tunnels.

At other SRL sites, station box excavation is also underway at Burwood and will soon start in Glen Waverley and Monash.

When SRL East is complete, Clayton will become one of Melbourne's busiest transport superhubs, linking the Gippsland, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines with SRL East and making it easier for people to access jobs, education and healthcare across the city.
