Construction of Victoria’s city-shaping Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East is surging ahead, with major construction now underway at the site of the new underground station in Clayton.
SRL East Tunnels South Contractor Suburban Connect – which is building the twin tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley – is transforming the Clayton site, with towering cranes, piling rigs and site infrastructure to support construction.
Crews will soon start excavating the underground station area, building the passenger connection to the existing Clayton station and underpin one of the support piers of the elevated rail line. This will ensure trains can keep operating on the Pakenham, Cranbourne and Gippsland lines during construction and support the load above the SRL East tunnels.
As part of these works, buses will replace trains from late August to early September between Parliament and Westall stations, and coaches will replace Gippsland line V/Line trains between Southern Cross and East Pakenham.
Clayton will become a transport super hub, with trains in 4 directions – connecting the Cranbourne/Pakenham and Gippsland lines to SRL and improving access to world-class hospitals and medical research.
As Australia’s largest housing project, SRL will deliver more homes, jobs and services in the neighbourhoods around the stations, with a long term vision for an additional 70,000 homes around the 6 SRL East stations.
We’re also delivering more open and green spaces, and new and upgraded walking and cycling tracks. Two new public spaces in Clayton open soon, with basketball hoops, children’s play equipment, a skating area and new trees and seating.
Construction of SRL East is creating up to 8000 jobs, with 3000 people already working on the project, tunnelling to start next year and trains taking passengers in 2035.
